The 2012 growing season got off to a similarly slow start as 2010 and 2011. However, in late May and early June temperatures started to warm up. By the end of the growing season we ended up with the accumulated heat units very similar to our long term average. We had a warm summer with temperatures consistently in the low to mid 90's, highlighted by a heat spike in early July where we had several days of triple digits. September cooled nicely, which allowed the berries to maturate slowly, creating a great concentration of fruit flavors reminiscent of 1998 and 2008. Deficit irrigation was used to stress the vine, along with de-leafing for uniform ripening. This harvest has the potential to be a very special vintage.
