Product Description
The 2012 growing season in the Finger Lakes was extremely hot and dry with temperatures in the 80s beginning in March! So dry, that at a few points, we were worried we were headed for a drought. Fortunately that didn't happen - and the result of this extended optimum growing season was one of the best vintages for red wine we have ever seen! Merlot is a grape that's very tricky to grow in the Finger Lakes and Wagner is one of the few wineries that are growing this variety. The reason we're able to successfully grow the Merlot grape is because we're located in the Banana Belt of Seneca Lake. Yes, Banana Belt. The Banana Belt is an area along the east side of Seneca Lake that stretches from Hector to Lodi, NY and is an additional mini micro climate. This micro climate creates warmer temperatures in the Banana Belt than those areas north or south. In addition, on the east side of Seneca Lake, we get that late afternoon and evening sun, providing excellent ripening conditions for our vines.
